Interview Excerpt (1984)
“…. I wanted to make pictures that were not pictures at all, which were in fact, little stage sets, deep paintings, 4-5 inches to 6 inches deep in which I'd have an enactment, a sort of tableau where I could paint images within a shallow environment rather like shop windows or tiny little theatre pieces.
…. I imagined I was sandwiching people, almost like human specimens if you were, rather like collecting Butterflys, archetypes and various people. I painted them on - working in reverse ….
Working from the back first, in other words, all the parts were in focus, were sort of eyelashes and moulds and freckles which of course would have appeared on the surface of the Perspex, working backwards to the flesh and sandwich them between the Perspex and then painting an environment around them.
I don't know whether they're ahead of their time but I see them as being ... of innovation and I think they are very very important works... documents. Of course, now, they've had an influence on a lot of the young painters, painters that have been collected. As a matter of fact, they are now collecting works on Perspex and shallow space ... Jon Cattapan, Peter Ellis, all painting on Perspex….”
